NRG Energy’s plans to build a new, 350-MW gas unit in Massachusetts won official approval from state officials.
The Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board granted the Canal 3 New Generation project unanimous approval, the Sandwich Enterprisereported. The new turbine will be installed at the Sandwich power plant on the Cape Cod Canal.
Though NRG shares ownership of the two existing Sandwich units with GenOn, GenOn’s bankruptcy is not expected to affect NRG’s plans.
The new unit is expected to begin construction this year, and has an agreement with ISO New England to be online by June 1, 2019.
